Lack of motivation can be a real obstacle to getting fit; it can derail even the most well-thought-out plans before they get off the ground. Starting and staying the course requires you to have a few tricks up your sleeve. Below are eight tips to fight inertia, start a new fitness routine, and stay inspired to meet your goals.

  1. Partner up

The support of a friend who also wants to get in shape can make all the difference. On those days when you want to skip aerobics class or your morning walk, a friend can hold you accountable. Plus, it can be more fun joining another person for a workout; it’s a great opportunity to socialize, meet up with friends, and even make new ones. The company you keep has a big influence, so having people in your corner with the same commitment to exercising is a good move. Shared goals can translate into shared successes as you cheer each other on and celebrate wins together.

  • Listen to something

The beat of your favorite tunes can boost your fitness routine. Create a workout playlist to listen to on your headphones and stay pumped as you’re walking on the treadmill at the gym or going through your weight training routine. Listening to a podcast can also provide an interesting distraction during your workout to keep your mind occupied. There are thousands of fitness-focused podcasts out there, but of course, any genre of podcast will do—use your workout as time to learn more about whatever subject you’re interested in, follow the news, or just enjoy some comedy. Audiobooks are also an excellent aural accompaniment to your workout. Whatever you choose, the time will go by quickly with something to listen to.

  • Designate a space

If you are able, creating a special place in your home for exercise is a great plan. You can set the space up any way you like—maybe you have an empty guest bedroom or a garage with extra room. Take the time to find the right equipment you need. Make it comfortable and inviting so that you look forward to your workout. And be sure to select a location in your home where you’ll have sufficient privacy and won’t be disturbed.

  • Get expert help

A personal trainer can offer invaluable expertise, whether you’re starting to work out, struggling with ongoing motivation, or wanting to up your game. When it comes to your fitness plan, you want to make sure you have all the support you can get. This is why teaming up with an experienced trainer can be so beneficial. They’ll have the skills and knowledge to put together a safe, effective program that’s tailored to your personal goals, current fitness level, lifestyle, and any physical limitations. Following the instructions and exercise plan laid out by a trainer can be very motivating, and of course, they can inspire you to stay on track.

  • Try a fitness app

There’s an incredible range of fitness apps you can try. There are ones that focus on yoga, those that instruct on high-intensity workouts, and everything in between. Many include gamification elements like awards, badges, and challenges to help you stay motivated and hit new milestones. Experiment with a few apps until you find a favorite. You might also mix things up by using different apps on different days of the week to design a workout regimen. For example, you might spend your Monday evenings doing yoga, another day doing high-intensity cycling to get your heart rate up, and yet another focused on strength training.

  • Hydrate with healthy options

Staying hydrated is essential when working out, but not all beverages are created equal. Try to stay away from fizzy drinks and those that have a high sugar content and little else to offer. Opt for plain water or add natural flavors. Slices of cucumber, orange, or lime; a few sprigs of mint; or some berries can make a refreshing drink that replenishes your fluids, helps regulate your internal temperature, and fights fatigue.

  • Find an activity you love

It’s much easier to maintain your motivation to get fit if you find an activity that actually appeals to you. So, if the idea of running on a treadmill bores you to tears, don’t bother with it. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to play pickleball or you just gravitate towards team sports in general; if so, consider joining a recreational league. You might also enjoy a walking or hiking club, or a group fitness class. Likewise, if you prefer solitary activities, follow your heart. The key is to choose activities you enjoy and that fit your personality and lifestyle, so that working out doesn’t feel like a slog.

  • Aim for consistency

Another key to staying motivated is to avoid being thrown off course when life gets in the way or your routine changes. Maybe you have to travel for work, or you’ll be away on a short vacation. Don’t let the change derail you—keep in mind that you can exercise almost anywhere. Get some physical activity in with a swim at the hotel pool or a weight training session at the gym. Take the stairs instead of an elevator when you have the chance, or simply take a break during the day for a walk around the block. Most of all, don’t be discouraged and give up if you can’t keep up with your exercise routine 100%. Remember, you are aiming for progress and consistency over the long term, not perfection every single day.
